FTb is definitely the best choice: it's exactly the camera you described (except the meter needle is on the right) plus it's more rugged and handles better than the AE1. The TX and TLb are essentially the same camera as the FTb but with the top speed limited to 1/500 second and the self-timer left off. All of these also have depth-of-field preview, a useful feature that the Pentax K1000 lacks.
