There are lots of good ole cameras out there. Each has its pluses and minuses. I'd recommended staying with the leaders as its best to build a system around a solid camera. The leaders are Nikon and Canon, starting with one of these bodies is best. My suggestions on models would be the Nikon FM/FE/FG or the Canon AE-1 Program/A-1.
If you see a camera that looks interesting then submit it and I'm sure you'll get relies about the merits of each one you are considering.
