If you want the proper battery it is referenced by Eveready as the 523 and Duracell as the PX21. You may be able to find these in alkaline form at Radio Shack. There is also the AA battery option that Moose wrote about. More discussion of the bstteries for the PLC, LLC and VLC is included in the link below his message.
I am relatively sure that the PLC3 has similar specs to the PLC2 linked below that attributes the battery as a Varta 21 PX.
The camera should work without the battery, which is only used to operate the meter.
