Thank you very much for this information. I'll try to obtain a parts diagram before attempting any disassembly so that I'll at least have a guide as to what to expect. I do have some experience repairing small mechanisms and 35mm projectors although not cameras. Hopefully this will help. I very much appreciate your having taken the time to help with this.

: : Thank you for your reply. I cannot detect any movement or bulges beneath the leatherette. The lens barrel moves within the focus ring which is solid and doesn't wobble at at all. I haven't attempted to disassemble it as yet because I want to have an idea of where I'm going when I do. I appreciate any suggestions as to what might cause this.

: I think in this case the main retainer ring which holds the lens assembly to the focussing helicoid has become loose. Unfortunately on this camera this ring can only be accessed after removing the complete front assembly. This is not very difficult but not a beginner's job.

: After removing the front assembly, remove the plastic light guide and unscrew the rear lens cell. Beneath it there is a small chrome ring which should be tightened.
