The last time I flew, I carried my camera bag on. I let them scan and inspect the bag. It should be no problem unless you're carrying a gun or knife in your bag. Did you ever watch how they throw baggage around? My camera bag had 2 SLRs, 3 lenses, 2 flashes, a digital camera, film, and other accessories in it, so it wasn't a small bag.
