Im hoping someone can tell me what I am looking for. I am wanting to take my negatives from old photos and make index prints so I can tell what pictures are on the negatives I am storing. My pictures and negatives are all mixed together in a box. Im looking to make something like what you get if you develop your pictures and they offer you the picture with a thumbprint size picture of all your photos. Do I need a negative scanner or something else?

If you had a film / transparency scanner, you could scan the negatives and save them to file. When you save them to file, make sure you put them all in a folder seperate from other files you've saved. You can then use Adobe Photoshop to print contact sheets. To do this click "file", then click "automate", and then click "contact sheet", and go from there. You can even set up the number of frames you want per sheet.

I'm sure that this can be done with other photo-editing programs, but I'm more familiar with Photoshop.

I recommend looking at the Primefilm 1800U film scanner from Pacific Image Electronics. It's reasonably priced compared to other film scanners made by Nikon and Minolta and works well with 35mm negatives and color slides.
