For at least 20 years I've been using a homemade D cell pack for my Vivitar 283 strobes. The D cell has 8 (that's EIGHT!) times the capacity of an AA, costs about twice as much, and doesn't heat up when shooting fast. The heat kills batteries. Start out with a "battery tray" for D cells at Radio Shack. If your flash uses 4 cells get that size, for 2 cell flashes get one that hold 2 D cells. Next you have to cut a notch in the battery compartment door of the flash for a cord. I use regular electric lamp cord. Lastly you need to make a couple of fake "batteries" to fit in the battery holder. Wood dowels the size of an AA cell, with a screw in the end to connect the wires works fine. I like to use a plug so I can disconnect the cord from the battery tray. A standard "phono" plug is on the cord, the matching socket epoxied to the battery tray. The tray will fit into a variety of small pouches available at any photo store. Have problems, Email me.
