I don't have the camera, so I am just guessing. I know from checking a few other sites, that you camera only programs the exposure for you, meaning you can't set shutter speeds and aperture, manually--and you have to have a bettery in for the camera to work. I would suspect that the green light in the viewfinder is a battery check light. The red light in the viewfinder may come on if the light level indicates the camera will trip the shutter at a speed lower than 1/60th of a second, with possible camera shake. Have you tested it outside in sunlight and does the red light come on, then?

The red light on the top of the Minolta Hi-Matic E is the battery check light. If it lights up when depressing the button then the batteries are considered functional. The light in the viewfinder tells you two things. If the green light comes on in the upper left corner then goes out as you continue to push the button down then the light is considered adequate for normal hand held shooting. BUT, if the green light turns RED as you depress the button then the shutter speed would be below 1/30th and its recommended to use the flash. Don, NCI
