If you are using a slave flash, you must make sure that the red-eye mode is shut off. If it isn't, your external flash will trip early.
If you are using a regular flash on the camera's hot-shoe, you have to use manual mode. Most digitals will not signal the hot-shoe unless in manual mode. Always make sure that the built-in flash is disabled when using an external flash.
