: : : I have been looking for a used zoom lens to fit my Minolta X-700. Any sugesstions on what to look for and what to avoid. I am looking at 200mm and above.

: : Hey Lorenzo--what you want to pay? The sky is the limit, you know. What lenses do you have now? What do you want to use the lens for?
: : Maybe you'll get more help by answering those questions.

: I currently have the standard 50mm that came with the camera. It is used for general us, weekedn trips, family pictures. Price range I'm looking at is less the $300. Not a great selection in the stores for these manual cameras. Thats why I'm looking at used cameras. I hope this helps. Thanks

I have the following Minolta macro lenses--I think all of them are great at less than $40 for each, except for the Minolta MC 50mm f3.5 macro which I splurged on and spent $55 (US):

Sun 28-80mm macro 3.5-4.5 (also branded as Spiratone) $32.

MD Celtic 135mm f3.5 $20. Great medium telephoto for the price.

MD Celtic 100-200mm f5.6 $30. Very long for the focal length, but light and handholdable.

Vivitar 200mm f3.5 $25. Vivitars are underrated, great lenses, but this is the older heavier type. So you don't want to be dragging it around all day.

Minolta MD 50mm f1.7. This lens is really a gem--great glass, great contrast, the only shortcoming is it is not a great close focusing lens. $35.

Minolta Rokkor X 45mm. Not as good as the 50mm, but still good. Rangefinder type focal length.

The MC macro f3.5 50mm is really a gem of a lens which can double as a standard lens, although it is significantly heavier than the 50mm mentioned above.

Sorry I can't be of more help with the zooms. I'm currently looking for something longer with which I can photograph birds and other wildlife -handheld. Some of the Korean lenses like Phoenix and Samyang, along with the Japanese Vivitar zooms may be something I end up with. You can get a 100-500mm f5.6 to 6.8 zoom new for $350 in that focal range. I'm looking at used ones in that range, because I don't want to spend that kind of money, for any lens.
