: I plan on purchasing a Nikon F5 for weddings and personal use. The way Digital photography is progressing, would it be wise to purchase a Digital camera instead of the Nikon F5? I see some very impressive pictures taken by medium end digital cameras. The processing time via computer along with adobe photoshop really cuts doown the time spent in the darkroom. How long before the conventional cameras are put on the shelves and only used recreationally?

ANSWER: It will never happen. When digital cameras reach 20 megapixels and function without batteries if necessary. Good luck waiting around!

Although I haven't needed to try it, I'm pretty sure my Canon G2 works without batteries.

Since its 4 megapixels produce better quality than 35mm film, I see no reason to wait around for the 20MP model.

i think a better-than-film, batteryless digital would be really cool!

actually, i think the recreational users will be the leaders here as in the past: the pros will be the last holdouts. what we now think
of as 'medium format', after all, was the stuff of brownie box cameras a century ago.

The no batteries bit is kind of weasel wording. You'd need to use the AC adapter to run the camera without batteries.

The quality is better than film, though.

Erik,

Regarding the respective quality of film vs. digital, the kindest way I can respond is that I'd suggest you do a bit of research at this
point in time in the development of digital imaging...

Does comparing the prints from my G2 to the ones from my 35mm SLRs count as research?
