: Several years ago i purchased a new camcorder. I packed up the Sony CCD-F401(it was working fine) and stored in a closet. Now I would like to send it away to school with my daughter. When powered up with a tape in it and set to VTR, the view finder shows a symbol that indicates the tape has moisture. It doesn't matter what tape is used. All show the same. When set to Camera, the view finder remains blank.
: Is there something simple to check? Is there any chance it can be repaired for a reasonable cost? Is it worth giving to Goodwill for them to repair and resell?
: Thanks for you time.

This problem has been reported before, and unless the camera has been stored in damp conditions, it is probably in need of professional repair. One final last ditch test might be to seal the video camera in a heavy plastic bag or container with a dessicant like silica gel, or with something from around the household which attracts moisture (a cup of rice or flour in a paper bag) and let the camera spend a week before testing again.

Sad to say, even if your Sony Handycam is repairable (it's at least six years old) the cost of repairing the camcorder is likely to approach what it is worth, between $150 to $200.

Goodwill will sell it "as is". Very unlikely they will repair it.
