since he bought it at a local camera store, you're in unusually good luck! run right down there with it and have them figure it out for you. they should be familiar with it and they have a good incentive to keep you happy... and it it IS a camera problem, get them to replace it on the spot.
online shoppers don't have this luxury: take advantage of it!
