What Does OEM Mean? A Primer for ConsumersMany photo consumers are surprised when they learn their famous brand camera, camcorder, flash, tripod, etc. is not actually made by the company whose name appears on the product but is manufactured instead by some company they perhaps have never heard of. This company is called an OEM, the acronym stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. An OEM company manufactures equipment to be sold under the label / brand of another company, often using the buyer's design specifications and production oversight. Some OEM relationships are public knowledge. For example, Dell printers are made by Lexmark, Quantaray lenses sold by Ritz Camera are made by Sigma, early Hewlett Packard digital cameras were manufactured by Pentax. 70% of the notebook computers sold in the world (Dell, Compaq, HP, Gateway, Apple, IBM, Sony etc.) are assembled by Quanta Computers in Taiwan. Many OEM relationships however are well-kept secrets, known only to industry insiders. Note: Consumers, end-users, even camera store owners generally can not do business with original equipment manufacturers.
