:Most photographers will reply either Canon or Nikon. My preference is NIKON. You pay a little more but the durability factor is higher than Canon. If you go with Nikon then stick with the Nikon lenses, better quality, better durability and higher resale value.

I agree about Nikon being the most obvious choice. Yet my vote isn't as much motivated by pro Nikon sentiments (although I have been using Nikon professionally for over twenty years) as by practical considerations.

Leica and Contax use superior Zeiss glass, but at a considerable price. Canon FD glass is also a good choice, but no longer availible new, and secondhand at surprisingly high price. Pentax makes the K mount compatible with their AF camera's, but as far as I know no longer makes all manual lenses.

Nikon lenses are quite abundant, both new and secondhand, and even the latest AFS lenses will fit on manual Nikon bodies (which BTW Nikon also still manufactures). And of course there plenty of third party manufacturers who make lenses with Nikon mounts.
