Lens mounts are NOT universal ! All lens mounts today are specifically made for one certain make of camera. So what is the best make?? Most photographers will reply either Canon or Nikon. My preference is NIKON. You pay a little more but the durability factor is higher than Canon. If you go with Nikon then stick with the Nikon lenses, better quality, better durability and higher resale value.
The comment about adapting a screw mount to 'any' camera is not totally accurate. Most often when doing this you lose the proper meter coupling and the light meter in your camera will either not work or read incorrectly, so be VERY careful with 'adapting' lenses. Best to stay away from that.
