In Reply to: Zenit Camera, how do I rewind film? posted by Kelli on August 18, 2000 at 23:18:08:
: I just bought an older Zenit (Russian) 35mm, completely
manual. Well, I have torn up two rolls of film trying to rewind.
The guide "wheels" will not let me rewind the film,
they only turn forward. I have searched camera up and down and
can't find a magic button. Please respond to my e-mail address.

There's an online manual for the Zenit TTL camera (similar to the Zenit E) on Alfred's Camera Page http://www.euronet.nl/~ucklomp/ (hyperlink below)
Click on Zenit E on the top navigation bar, at the bottom of the page on the Zenit E is a link to the online camera manual.
According to Alfred Klomp, "The exposure counter is the ring around the shutter release button, which is in the big knob on the top right of the camera. Whenever you insert a film, you have to set this counter manually to '1', because the Zenit-E, basic as it is, doesn't have an automatically resetting counter. The little knob on the top right of the camera, next to the shutter speed dial, is the sprocket release. Whenever you press this button, it first releases the shutter if it was still cocked (make sure to not cock the shutter when you want to rewind, because the Zenit-E will take an extra, unexpected picture), and then it releases the sprocket, so that it can turn in opposite direction too (normally it turns one way only), and the film can be rewound. The rewind lever is sunken into the big knob on the top left. If you twist it slightly with a fingertip opposite to the arrow, it 'll shoot up. Then turn it in the direction of the arrow to rewind the film. Do that until you don't feel any tension anymore, and the film will be rewound into its cassette.
