The trigger voltage of your flash unit (the voltage present at the sync cord) is probably not compatible with the electronics of the camera. I don't have a Canon, but this problem is is described in the troubleshooting section of one of my Nikon camera manuals. The flash trigger circuitry on some newer cameras designed for dedicated flash units is not compatible with standard PC-corded flash units. Higher end cameras designed to work with both dedicated flash units and studio strobes usually have a second PC socket.
