Hi-
I'm having a problem with my minolta maxxum spxi camra. When I try to zoom in on something it doesn't always focus. If I take the lens off and then snap it back on it will focus. Any ideas what is wrong with it.

Your camera requires contrast and vertical lines for the AF to operate properly. In some cases the cameras CCD (af sensor) can become dirty or lose its sensitivity. The AF will work at wide angle (or with fixed focal length lenses) but not when zoomed out. In some cases the iris control mechanism on the i series Minoltas can fail and keep the lens stopped down thereby limiting light from reaching the AF sensor.

First I'd ensure I was giving the AF Sensor a valid target, high contrast, sufficient light level and vertical lines with the AF Target area. Assuming this is OK, then try another lens on the camera and determine if this is a lens or a body problem. Finally have the camera and lens tested by a trained camera technician or we'd be glad to check it out for you and supply an estimage for repair.

Sincerely, Dave Marsh
