Alright Derek, here is my 2 cents worth. I used an old Praktica in school. Once I was hooked, my parents bought me a Canon Eos Elan. Not a bad camera. At the time it was great. The whisper drive on that thing was fabulous. IS fabulous, I still use the camera. Anyways. I have heard from others that the Rebel 2000 is a great camera. I have also heard that the N60 and N70 are just as good. The N70 being the better. I prefer Canon (only because it was my first). The Eos is built like a brick Sh*t-house. I have put mine through everything. I have had it for 6 years now with not one problem. the 28-80 is very sharp.
I am sure someone will come vouch for the Nikon.
