Always blow as much dust off as you can before touching the lens with anything. Lightly brush lens with camels hair brush before using lens cleaning solution. Use a GOOD quality lens cleaner made specifically for camera lenses. Do not use lens tissues made for eyeglasses, they sometimes are coated with solutions that may damage lens coatings. Put the lens cleaner on the tissue or cloth not on the lens. I personally prefer not to use cleaning solutions. If the lens is that dirty, I feel better having it cleaned professionally.
