In Reply to: $700+ Need SLR & Telephoto- What Kind? posted by gary b on November 26, 1999 at 04:27:50:
: I have been looking at several SLR choices Nikon N70, Minolta Maxxum 800si, Pentax Pz-1p, Cannon EOS Elan IIE, I also need a telephoto for nature photography to go with it, preferably up to 300mm. I have about $700 possibly a bit more to spend. I feel lost with all of the information out there. I am currently using an old Cannon T50 with a Gemini 80-200 lens. Thanks for any feedback. Gary B,
The cameras you have looked into are all very good, however,
if you are going into the wild I wuld much personally prefer a
full solid die cast chasis camera.
If the $700 figure is your body budget (and not your camera +
lens budget) I would recommend you look into a Nikon N8008s used,
which can be found at 'Exc. Plus' condition for about $550, that
way you could have a great rugged pro body with all kind of
functions like spot metering and $150 to save and add to your
lens budget.
Now, for the lens, it all depends on you budget:
a) Nikon 300mm f/2.8 AF D AIS (about $3300 used, mint)
a) Nikon 300mm f/4 AF D (around $800 used, Exc.+)
b) Nikon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 AF D (about $250 new !)
and the Tokinas, Sigmas and Vivitars.
If you $700 figure is for the complete kit.
You may get (for your money) better results with manual lenses
than with consumer lenses Auto Focus. If you would agree to this
premise, then there is no need for an AF body and the choices are
Nikon FE2 and Canon AE1. The Canon AE1 I would not recommend for
the fact that the FD lenses cannot be used on the EOS series as
you upgrade, whereas the Nikon manual lenses can be used on all
of the Nikon line with very few exceptions.
A good used Nikon FE2 which has a body titanium shutter, high
shutter speed 1/4000, X- sync 1/250, improper exposure warning.
Manual and aperture preferred AE metering, centerweighted (60/40)
metering pattern, LED and needle meter display. In Exc+ condition
is only about $300.
That leaves us with $400 for a good used 300mm f/4.5 AIS manual
lens. Have a great time
