Bob,
You could get a "copyright Bob Flemming" stamp for marking the back of your prints with waterproof ink. But sadly, in these days of high-end scanners and PhotoShop, it's almost impossible to prevent anyone copying your prints. If you have prints done with a raster surface rather than glossy, you at least make it more difficult for anybody to get a good quality copy. Glossy paper copies rather well...
It's happened to me, too. I was foolish enough to shoot a large choir years ago, and fell for the "We'll just take two 8x10s, and order more later." trick. Never again - I learned my lesson! Money up front nowadays!
