Framing The Shot, cont.

The Landscape Version

landscape view or horizontal format Here's the landscape version. This is an uncropped full-frame shot. The store clerk wouldn't let me move the white sandwich board which uglifies the right edge (that's what image editors are for.) Also I don't like the vertical door frame cutting through the center.

The Portrait Version

Here's the portrait version of the same scene. Again this is a full-frame shot with no cropping.

Deciding which format is the better choice often comes down to a judgment call.

I think it's clear the vertical format suits this subject. I'm able to get rid of most of the distracting white sandwich board, include more of the colorful posters decorating the window, and move the vertical lines of the door frame well off center.

There's just one thing left to do.

portrait or vertical format
The Final Shot

Bringing the image into Micrografx Picture Publisher, I used the clone tool and quickly removed the distracting white sandwich board from the lower right corner of the photo. I applied the unsharp masking filter to sharpen the text and details, and saved the image as a .tif and then as a .jpg for the web.

The sign which first caught my eye remains the subject of the photograph, and the context in which the sign exists is preserved.

Drop by soon for another installment of Basic Photo.
